How to improve website performance?

Hey Guys!

Today, we are going list a number of options to let you make your website perform better.

We have seen huge growth in website development in last few years. It is also due to so many easy to build softwares out there. Now, even a novice can create his/her own website with just a few clicks of mouse.

With such websites coming up at rapid speeds, we tend to ignore the performance of the website.

So, how to improve website performance?

This remains an unanswered question. It is often an issue with people who are using a-few-click ready-made websites, and hiring some lesser experienced website developers.

We are going to list a number of options to make your website perform better.

  • Avoid image-heavy pages

Most of the users expect any website to load within 2-3 seconds. But it is not always the case as a website may have used some heavy images, scripts, multiple CSSs, and many elements that take time to load. One should avoid using multiple scripts, heavy CSSs and large size images to speed up the website load time.

It is understandable that there can be certain businesses/services that require a number of images on their website to showcase their work and services. In such unavoidable circumstances, one can use optimized images on their website. Such images can reduce load time drastically.

  • Enable Compression

Page with more content tend to load slow. Large pages can take time to load more so when there are many styles used and they are coming from different scripts/stylesheets. To avoid such delays for large pages, one should enable compression. Most of the websites use Gzip to compress the pages and it can reduce load time to speed up the page loads.

  • Enable Caching

When a page loads for the first time, it load all the related stylesheets, scripts and other resources for that page. And these are saved in the temporary memory or cache. So, next time it loads the resources can be used from cache/temporary memory to load the page faster. Thus, it is advisable to enable cache for various resources. And expiring time for each resource should be set according to frequency of changes in such resources.

  • Minifying Resources

As we know a website page is build up using various resources. It is highly advisable to use minified resources.
Every single line break, indent etc. can increase the page size and let page load slower. So it is highly likely to get those resources minified. You can minify HTML, CSS and Javascript codes.

  • Reduce redirects on your website

Now a days, there are various devices of variable screen size that can be used to access a website page. For those, there are options to make websites screen responsive. i.e. laying out the content, images etc. of the website as per screen layout. For this either CSS can be created to make pages responsive or redirecting to another url with lesser resources so that website load faster on smaller screens. But it should be kept in mind to reduce such redirects. Redirecting www to non-www and http to https urls etc. can be avoided to reduce load time and improve website performance.

Some of these steps can be managed easily by yourself. But for more advanced ones, one need to hire/contact a professional.

We hope these tips can be helpful for all those who are looking forward to improved the performance of their websites.
